Play begins Friday afternoon

SUMMERSIDE – Three Oaks Senior High School is hosting a six-team senior AA boys’ basketball tournament here this weekend.

Play begins on Friday and wraps up with the championship game on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

The teams are divided into two pools, with Pool A consisting of the host Axemen, Souris Spartans and Bluefield Bobcats while Pool B is comprised of the Charlottetown Rural Raiders, Montague Vikings and Morell Marlins.

The Pool A round robin will be played at the Three Oaks gymnasium on Friday, and the three Pool B games will be played at Charlottetown Rural High School. All of Saturday’s games will take place at Three Oaks.

“It’s been a roller-coaster of a season so far,” assessed Axemen head coach Les Smith. “We went undefeated the first three or four games, lost two in a row and then won a bunch.”

The Axemen, who went into this week’s play with a 7-4 (won-lost) record in P.E.I. School Athletic Association league games, are going into the tournament with high expectations.

“If the boys come to play, have their heads in the game and we are healthy, we should be able to have a strong showing,” continued Smith.

The Axemen open play against Bluefield at 2 p.m., and then face Souris at 5:30 p.m.

“We haven’t seen Souris this year,” said Smith. “Souris is one of the stronger teams down east.”

The 12-member Axemen team is comprised of four Grade 12s, five Grade 11s and three Grade 10s.

“They have a strong Grade 12 core, plus the Grade 11s have a lot of experience and have a lot of potential going forward with some strong Grade 10s,” said Smith. “They have lots of potential, are high on emotions and the key is to control the emotions and keep their heads in the game. When that’s done there is no team that they cannot beat.”

Injuries

The Axemen have also been hampered by injuries this season, including the loss of high-scoring point guard Colton Wadman, who is averaging over 20 points a game. Smith added Wadman is questionable for this weekend.

While Wadman quarterbacks the offence, Smith went on to say Mallett is another key performer.

“Our big man is Zach Mallett, who is dominant at the low post, is a leader, a motivator and has a big heart,” added Smith.
