CHARLOTTETOWN – Women’s basketball player Darcy Zinck and men’s hockey player Wayne Savage have been chosen as the UPEI athletes of the week.
Zinck, a third-year arts student from Halifax, N.S., led the Panthers offensively while providing excellent defence and leadership in last weekend’s action.
The five-foot-eight point guard scored 15 points, including shooting 5-for-7 from beyond the three-point line, collected three rebounds and had four assists in the Panthers’ 62-60 loss to Acadia on Friday. Saturday, the Panthers rebounded for a 58-50 win over Acadia, with Zink producing 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Savage, a fourth-year arts student from St. Thomas, Ont., provided outstanding goaltending on the weekend, backstopping the Panthers to two important road wins.
Friday, Savage turned in a 34-save performance in a 4-0 win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men. Saturday, the Panthers defeated Saint Mary’s 3-2, and Savage stopped 38 of 40 shots and assisted on Chris Desousa’s game-winning goal on a breakaway.
Zinck and Savage will be recognized at this week’s UPEI athletes of the week celebration in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre’s McMillan Hall on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 12:45 p.m. All are welcome.
