CHARLOTTETOWN – Basketball players Janea Barrett and Jake Kendrick have been chosen as the Holland College Hurricanes’ athletes of the week for the week ending Jan. 19.
Barrett, a guard from Toronto, Ont., in the sport and leisure management program, joined the Hurricanes after the Christmas break, and has instantly made an impact.
Saturday, versus the St. Thomas Tommies, Barrett led the Hurricanes with 14 points, seven rebounds and shot 7-for-10 from the field.
Sunday, Barrett went on to register 14 points and eight rebounds in a game versus the UNBSJ Seawolves in Saint John, N.B.
The women’s Hurricanes were defeated in Fredericton on Saturday, but rebounded with a 96-65 victory on Sunday versus the Seawolves. The Hurricanes sit in second place in the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) standings with a 9-2 (won-lost) record, and were placed No. 8 in last week’s Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national women’s basketball rankings.
Kendrick, a guard from Wolfville, N.S., is a second-year sport and leisure management student.
Kendrick led the Hurricanes offensively to two victories this weekend versus St. Thomas and UNBSJ. Saturday, Kendrick scored 23 points versus the Tommies and shot 7-for-9 from the field while he scored 21 points in the game Sunday.
The men’s Hurricanes went 2-0 on the weekend with a win over St. Thomas, followed by a 96-66 victory in Sunday’s game in Saint John.
The Hurricanes currently sit at 9-2 on the season, and hold seventh place in the CCAA national rankings as well as the No. 2 position in the ACAA standings.
The Hurricanes visit the Dalhousie Agricultural College Rams on Saturday and the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday.
