Ellsworth, Murphy pick up wins at Provincial Legion curling

ALBERTON -- It was a rough opening draw for Summerside Legion teams in the P.E.I. Provincial Command Legion Curling Championship Friday at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. The Kevin Ellsworth rink from the host St. Anthony’s Legion defeated the Lou Nowlan Summerside Legion foursome 8-4 in one game and the Dave Murphy rink from Charlottetown Legion defeated Dale Cannon’s rink from Summerside 10-6 in the other game.

Only four teams are entered in the double knock-out championship. The winning team will advance to the Dominion Command national championship in Dauphin, Manitoba March 15 to 19.

The defending champion skip, Mel Bernard, is not entered this year, but his team members are, with Blair Jay playing for Cannon. Nowlan and his lead, Earle Proude, also played for Bernard last year.

In today’s 10 a.m. draw last night’s winners, Ellsworth and Murph,y meet in the “A" final while the losing teams face each other with the loser going home. The loser of the Ellsworth-Murphy game will play the survivor of the Nowlan-Cannon game this afternoon at 3 p.m. There are also draws scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday and, if necessary, 3 p.m. Sunday.
