CHARLOTTETOWN – Montague’s Stephen Clark continued his fine form on the wrestling mat by winning the Golden Bear Invitational last weekend in Edmonton.
Competing in the 82-kilogram category, it was Clark’s second win on the varsity circuit this season, having won previously in Calgary at the Dinos Invitational last October. He also has a second-place showing from the Huskies Open in Saskatoon, and a fourth-place finish at the Simon Fraser International to his credit.
Clark, who is making a comeback after more than a year away from competitive tournaments, is training with Islanders Dan and Leo McGee at the University of Regina while wrestling for the Cattown Club.
Clark’s victory is one of a number of excellent showings so far this season by Island wrestlers. Winsloe’s Veronica Keefe, wrestling for Concordia, has grabbed three wins on the circuit to date – at the Concordia Invitational (winning both the 72-kilogram and 82-kilogram divisions) and at the McMaster Invitational.
In addition, Keefe has won two international gold medals, at the Francophonie Games in Nice, France, and the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in South Africa.
Charlottetown’s Trevor Banks, also with the Concordia Stingers, has finished second at the Concordia meet, and third at McMaster, both in the 57-kilogram categories.
In addition to Clark, Keefe and Banks, MacKenzie Sapier is wrestling with UNB while Jillian Durant is on the roster for the University of Regina Cougars.
Major events coming up on the schedule include the University of Regina Cougar Open and the Brock Invitational this weekend; the Guelph Open the following week, and the Western Open on Feb. 1. The CIS championships are scheduled from Feb. 28 to March 1 in Fredericton, N.B.
