SUMMERSIDE – The 2014 friendship synchronized skating championships will take place here at Eastlink Arena on Sunday.

The Summerside Silhouettes’ pre-novice team practises its routine in preparation for Sunday’s competition at Eastlink Arena.

The Summerside Figure Skating Club is hosting the event that is sanctioned by Skate Canada P.E.I.

A total of 17 teams, including 14 from Prince Edward Island and three from Nova Scotia, will participate. This will be the first competition of the season for the Island teams.

"This is my favourite competition of the season,” said P.E.I. synchronized skating chair Kelly Perry. “The passion for the sport and the team spirit is strongly visible in the dressing rooms, the stands and on ice.

“It is such a rewarding and beautiful sport. Hard work certainly pays off, but like many other sports it comes down to the day.

"We are looking forward to a fun day."

The teams, which range from 8 to 16 skaters, will compete from beginner to intermediate categories.

The competition consists of three components, and promotes team spirit, unity and friendship. The teams will be judged on a synchronized skating skill, freeskate program and a team cheer.

Spectators are invited to come and watch the freeskate programs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free.

The cheer portion of the event will take place in the Veterans Convention Centre beginning at 1:45 p.m.
