The Panthers defeated the Amherst Regional High School Vikings 78-46 in an all-Nova Scotia final of the 21st annual senior AAA boys’ basketball tournament at the Three Oaks gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

“Amherst is a very hard-fighting scrappy team,” said Panthers head coach Kent Cooper, who acknowledged his team had to dig deep for the win despite the final score. “(There is) no quit in them, and they put up a hard fight.

“It took our guys some time to adjust, and eventually we just started chipping away at it and pulled off the win.”

Strong second half

The Panthers, who completed the three-day tournament a perfect 4-0 (won-lost), took a 29-25 lead into halftime and then pulled away in the second half as they outscored the Vikings 49-21.

“We hung tough for 3 1/2 quarters, but their athleticism and their depth became too much for us to handle,” said Vikings coach Tom Skaber. “We ran out of gas and they were just able to dig that much deeper than we could.”

Top scorers

Lindell Wigginton poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the Panthers, who received a 15-point effort from Ben Kidston and eight from Matt Nielson.

Jason Morse (17), Adrian Van Vulpen (15) and Logan Dowe (10) all scored in double digits for the Vikings, who completed tournament play 3-1.

The Panthers’ Dekeyo Downey was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Round-robin finale

The Vikings punched their ticket to the championship game with a 73-54 win over Miramichi Valley in the final game of the round robin on Saturday morning.

A Miramichi Valley win would have created a three-way tie at 2-1 with Amherst and the host Three Oaks Axemen.

Van Vulpen led the Vikings with 25 points. Dowe (11) and Morse (9) were the other top scorers.

Travis Valanne (14), Shannon Huber (13) and Ryan Dickson (12) were Miramichi Valley’s leading point-producers.

Amherst, which also defeated Three Oaks 85-50 and Bluefield 104-30 in round-robin play, led Miramichi Valley 37-22 at the half.
