Prince Andrew clinches berth in final
SUMMERSIDE – It was a day of mixed results for the host Three Oaks Axemen in the 21st annual Christmas Classic on Friday.
After opening the senior AAA boys’ basketball tournament with a win against the Bluefield Bobcats on Thursday night, the Axemen led the Amherst Vikings 34-31 at halftime of Friday afternoon’s game, played before the student body at Three Oaks. However, the second half was all Amherst as the Vikings outscored the Axemen 54-16 en route to an 85-50 victory.
The Axemen, though, rebounded to defeat Miramichi Valley 66-55 in an evening game to complete round-robin play in the Green Pool at 2-1 (won-lost).
The win leaves the Axemen at 2-1 (won-lost) while Miramichi Valley is 1-1. There is a chance there could be three teams at 2-1 in the Green Pool after Saturday morning’s round-robin finale between Miramichi Valley and Amherst (2-0).
The first-place team in the pool will take on the defending-champion Prince Andrew Panthers in the championship game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Prince Andrew defeated Colonel Gray 70-49 on Friday evening to complete the round robin 3-0.
In other games Friday, Prince Andrew pulled out an exciting 86-83 win over the Charlottetown Rural Raiders; Amherst defeated Bluefield 104-30; Miramichi Valley downed Bluefield 69-32; Colonel Gray got by Westisle 73-62, and Charlottetown Rural beat Westisle 77-36.
Amherst 85 Three Oaks 50
At Three Oaks, Logan Dowe scored a game-high 20 points to lead Vikings, who received a 14-point effort from Caleb Hayes and 10 from Jason Morse.
Aidan Smith (10), Ty Wright (11) and Tanner Mendoza (10) were the Axemen’s top scorers.
Players of the game were Dowe and Mendoza.
Three Oaks 66 Miramichi Valley 55
At Three Oaks, Wright, with 18 points, and Mendoza’s 17-point effort led the way for the Axemen. James Meek poured in 14 points as Three Oaks led 33-26 at halftime.
Shannon Huber and Michael Tozer each sank 14 points for Miramichi Valley.
Players of the game were Meek and Michael Tozer (Miramichi Valley).
Colonel Gray 73 Westisle 62
At Summerside Intermediate School, Gray took a 26-25 lead into halftime.
Jeremy Thompson’s 22 points led Gray, which received 14 from Max Ramsay and 10 from Michael Clow.
Kenan Wilkie (18), Austin Luxton (8) and Corey Buchanan (7) were Westisle’s top point-getters.
Players of the game were Thompson and Wilkie.
Charlottetown Rural 77 Westisle 36
Lucas Clow (15), Dom Ryan (13) and Logan MacDonald (11) all scored in double digits for Rural, which led 48-23 at the half.
Connor Herget (9), Brett Laird (8) and Luxton (6) were Westisle’s leading scorers.
Players of the game were Ryan and Herget.
