SUMMERSIDE – The expansion Summerside Source For Sports Capitals posted their first franchise win Friday night at The Plex, Slemon Park, getting by the North River Flames 6-5 in a shoot-out win in junior C hockey action.
The Capitals built a 3-0 first period lead on the strength of a pair of goals from Travis Thibodeau, and a single from Tyler Peters. In the middle frame the Flames roared back with goals from Cameron MacMurdo and Lal Hennessey to draw the Flames within one. Nathan Arsenault gave the Capitals a two-goal cushion before Ryan McGuain and Brad Vukicievic sent the teams to the locker rooms at 4-4 after 40 minutes. Zack MacDonald for the Capitals and Ryan McGuigan, with his second of the night, for the Flames exchanged third period goals to force OT. Tyler Dexter and Cody Arsenault each had a pair of assists for the Capitals, while Spencer Hay, Reed Gallant, and Logan LeClair added helpers for the Flames.
In the overtime, both netminders made key saves to turn back all shots, forcing a shoot-out to decide the winner.
Lala Hennessey and Ryan MacGuigan for the Flames and Greg Arsenault and Tyler Peters for the Capitals scored in the first set of three shooters to force sudden death shoot-out. Capitals netminder Jake Perry stopped Brady McQuaid setting the stage for the Capitals Travis Thibodeau to score his third of the night and the game winner.
The Capitals out shot the Flames 54-37. Catlin Richard and Jake Perry split the goaltending win for the Capitals, Richard stopping 17/18 and Perry turned aside 15/19 while Kurt Willis of the Flames stopped 49/54 shoots he faced.
Referee Brent Servos whistled the Capitals for nine minors, a 10-minute misconduct, a game misconduct, and one fighting major, while the Flames were assessed seven minors, a 10-minute misconduct, a game misconduct and a fighting major.
