VERNON RIVER – M.E. Callaghan took charge of the P.E.I. School Athletic Association midget girls golf championship at Avondale on Wednesday.
Callaghan teammates Gemma Shea and Julie Gallant fired rounds of 53 and 55 in the nine-hole event to win the gold and silver medals. Lexi Murphy from Kensington Intermediate-Senior High (KISH) carded a 57 in winning the bronze medal.
The Callaghan team, which also consisted of Lindsay Callaghan, Hannah Hackett and coach Joe Sullivan, won the team championship with a score of 176. That was good enough for a 26-stroke victory at the Avondale Golf Club.
The Dave Matthews-coached team of Kristen Lidstone, Joelle Murphy, Fiona Nicholson and Kaitlyn Gallant from Gulf Shore won the silver medal while the Summerside Intermediate School (SIS) team of Jordyn Connell, Jessica Misener, Reese MacDonald, Maggie Costain and coach Pat Coyle took bronze. SIS finished with a team score of 217.
Grant Koughan from Stonepark fired a 75 for a two-stroke victory in the 18-hole PEISAA midget boys golf championship, also held on Wednesday at Avondale.
His teammate Jason Poley took silver while East Wiltshire’s Blake Thomson from East Wiltshire carded an 83 for the bronze medal.
Led by Koughan and Poley’s performances, Stonepark won the boys’ team gold medal, with a score of 235. Other team members are Innis Wheatley, Barrington Duffy and coach Norman Beck.
The Queen Charlotte squad of Mike Favier, Ryan Cameron, Zack Willis, Riley MacKay and coach Roddy Willis claimed silver. Their score was 260.
The East Wiltshire team of Adrian Mallett, Blake Thomson, Tanner Hood, Noah Woodworth and coach Nick Phalen finished two strokes back to earn the bronze medal.
