WOODSTOCK -- Senior boys and girls are first to the course for the Zone One Cross Country championships Thursday at Mill River Provincial Park.
Meet manager Paul Goguen is expecting over 410 participants from 12 schools for the championships, which begin with the senior boys and girls’ four-kilometer race at 10 a.m.
More than 350 runners participated last year at Mill River, the regular site for the Zone 1 and provincial meets.
Goguen is counting on warm conditions for the scenic, spectator-friendly event.
Participating elementary schools are Bloomfield, Alberton, Tignish, St. Louis, Ellerslie, O’Leary, École Pierre Chiasson, École Évangeline and John J. Sark.
Junior high schools are Hernewood, M.E. Callaghan and École Évangeline, and the participating high schools are Westisle and École Évangeline.
“The support we get from our school board, our administrators and our teachers allows physical education teachers and coaches to train and bring so many students to run every year,” Goguen said. “Kids love to run, and I’m not surprised of the high numbers we’ve been getting.”
Leadership students from M.E. Callaghan will help stage the zone meet.
“Again, this year, we are getting lots of support from P.E.I. Parks for allowing us to use this beautiful site to host our event,” said Goguen. “We have a total of six different courses set up from 1.5 kilometres to four kilometres all along the park.

“It just sets well for a safe cross country course and spectator friendly.”
There are 10 race times from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Runners in each race are vying for spots in the provincial championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, also at Mill River. The top 20 runners and top five teams in each event qualify for the provincials.
