In P.E.I. Bantam Tackle Football League
SUMMERSIDE – It was the ‘Cameron Paynter Show’ for the Summerside Waterwise Spartans on Friday night.
Paynter scored five rushing touchdowns to lead the Spartans to a season-opening 50-24 victory over the Amherst Wolfpack in the P.E.I. Bantam Tackle Football League at Eric Johnston Field on Friday night.
Seb Roy-Garand scored two touchdowns for the Spartans, and defensive end Jordan Montgomery scampered approximately 50 yards for a major score after picking up a fumble.
The Spartans built a 40-12 lead at halftime.
“The coaching staff is very pleased with the first game of the season,” assessed Spartans head coach John Turner. “We certainly have a lot of work to do to get better each week, but we only have six players back and there’s quite a learning curve in this league.”
Along with pointing out Paynter’s efforts, Turner also acknowledged kicker Matt Tanton.
“Our kicking game was good as we had two converts after touchdowns, which is good because you get extra points for kicking the ball through the uprights.”
Next home game
The Spartans’ next home game is against the defending-champion Charlottetown Privateers on Friday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m.
That game will be followed by the regular-season opener for the Summerside Clippers of the P.E.I. Tackle Football League. The Clippers will host the Charlottetown Privateers at 8 p.m.
