Medal games scheduled for Winsloe Soccer Complex
CHARLOTTETOWN – The Subway youth soccer under-12 boys and girls’ Second, First and Premier Divisions will crown the 2013 champions at the Winsloe Soccer Complex on Saturday.
Ten of the 13 member soccer clubs will have a team playing for either a bronze or gold medal.
The association introduced a Second Division at the under-12 level to go along with the First and Premier levels, and the result has been excellent. A media release from the P.E.I. Soccer Association notes competition at all three levels has resulted in more entertaining, competitive and evenly-matched contests.
Following is a look at Saturday’s games:
Under-12 Girls Second Division
The Central Queens Clippers will try to follow up a regular-season championship by winning the Provincial Cup.
The Clippers will face the Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals in the final at 10:30 a.m.
Karley McKinnon and Carla MacDonald shared the shutout for the Clippers in a 3-0 semifinal victory over the Eliot River Ramblers.
The Royals needed penalty kicks to reach the final after a scoreless draw against Kensington.
Kensington and Eliot River play in the bronze-medal match at 9 a.m.
Under-12 Boys Second Division
The North Shore Sharks will also try to go for the double as they face the Ramblers in the gold-medal showdown at 1:30 p.m.
The Sharks needed a penalty-kick shootout to get past the Clippers after the game ended 4-4. Ben Watts scored the tying goal for the Sharks in the last minute of the game to send it to penalty kicks. Jack Drake countered with a hat trick for the Clippers.
Parker MacDonald scored twice to lead the Ramblers to the final with a 3-1 victory over Kensington.
The Clippers face Kensington for the bronze medal at noon.
Under-12 Girls First Division
The Summerside United, after a 3-2 victory over Eliot River, will take on the Morell Strikers at 10:30 a.m.
Bailey MacLean scored a hat trick to lead the Strikers to a 4-2 semifinal victory over North Shore.
Eliot River and North Shore kick off the bronze-medal game at 9 a.m.
Under-12 Boys First Division
Kensington will try to cap an undefeated season against Winsloe/Charlottetown in the gold-medal match at 10:45 a.m. The Royals did tie Kensington 5-5 during the regular season.
With a pair of goals from Peyton Lauwerijssen and Cameron Mill, Kensington reached the final with a 6-1 victory over Summerside.
Andrew Stewart had a hat trick to lead Winsloe/Charlottetown past North Shore 4-2.
Summerside and North Shore will meet for the bronze medal at 9:15 a.m.
Under-12 Girls Premier Division
Madelyn Aylward scored the winning goal with a minute left to play to lift the West Prince Storm past the Sherwood-Parkdale Rangers in a semifinal match.
The Storm will face regular-season champion Summerside United in the final at 1:30 p.m.
The United got a pair of goals from Paige Deighan in a 4-1 victory over Winsloe/Charlottetown.
The bronze-medal match is scheduled for noon.
Under-12 Boys Premier Division
The Storm will also be represented in the boys’ final after a regular-season championship. The Storm, led by Chase Gaudet’s two goals in the each quarter-final and semifinal matches, will face the Ramblers at 1:45 p.m.
The Ramblers were taken to penalty kicks in their quarter-final and semifinals, before reaching the final. Keegan McKinnon stopped both kicks in the semifinal shootout after a scoreless draw with Stratford. Stratford’s Will Ross had his second shutout, and didn’t concede a goal during the quarter-finals and semifinals.
Ross and his teammates face the Rangers for the bronze medal at 12:15 p.m.
