At Atlantic peewee AAA baseball championship
FREDERICTON – It was a good start to Friday for P.E.I.’s two teams at the Baseball Canada Atlantic peewee AAA championship.
The Sherwood Knights, who are P.E.I.’s No. Two team, routed Moncton (New Brunswick One) by a 17-6 score on Friday morning to improve to 2-0 (won-lost).
The Summerside Chevys (P.E.I. One) evened their record at 1-1 with a 17-1 victory over Conception Bay North (Newfoundland and Labrador Two) in an early-afternoon contest.
The P.E.I. teams are back in action later Friday as the Knights take on Dartmouth (Nova Scotia Two) at 4 p.m., and the Chevys meet Tri-County (Nova Scotia One) at 7 p.m.
Summerside 17 Conception Bay North 1
The Chevys built a 5-0 lead after two innings, and then blew the game open with 12 runs in the bottom of the third inning to open up a 17-1 lead en route to the victory. The game was called after 3 1/2 innings due to the mercy rule.
Dylan Noonan’s 3-for-3 batting summary led Summerside’s attack. Noonan also scored a pair of runs and drove in two more. Ethan Francis (2-2, two runs scored, three runs batted in) and Ethan Beaulieu (2-2, two runs scored, three RBI) also had big offensive performances.
Winning pitcher Ross Paynter pitched a one-hitter in going the distance.
Sherwood-Parkdale 17 Moncton 6
Four players – Nathan LeClair (3-3, three runs scored), Carter Melnick (3-4, three runs scored, three RBI), Chandler Laporte (3-5, three runs scored, RBI) and Gabriel Penalver (3-5, three runs scored, RBI) – swung hot bats for the Knights.
Connor Jones, Kyle Kennedy, Noah Duckworth and LeClair shared the pitching chores for the Knights.
