On the road against Amherst Wolfpack
SUMMERSIDE – Atom football is back in Summerside once again this season as the Summerside Cox & Palmer Spartans are ready to hit the road for their first game of the season.
The Spartans will play the Amherst Wolfpack on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
Summerside plays in the Moncton Minor Football Association, and will play a seven-game schedule against teams from Moncton, Dieppe, Riverview and Sackville.
The Spartans are coming off a 3-6 (won-lost) record in their inaugural season of atom football in 2013.
With 12 returning players, this year's team should be very competitive, and the Spartans are hoping for at least a .500 season.
"We have all our offensive line back, along with our quarterback, and two receivers,” said Spartans head coach John Turner. “The learning curve for these players will be nothing like last season, which will greatly help with offensive execution and should help against Amherst."
The Spartans’ offence is hoping to put some points on the board to help out the defence.
"We have some size at running back this year, which should help us on those short-yardage plays that we couldn't convert last season to keep drives going,” noted Turner. “Our fullback is Parker Williams from Charlottetown, and he's a solid 150 pounds and can run. He will move the pile.
“Also, Connor Keough can run and has great vision, which is so important for this position."
Defensively, the Spartans’ defensive line returns, along with three players at linebacker and in the secondary.

"We should be able to stop teams this year, and get the ball back for our offence," added Spartans assistant coach Paul Walsh. "In training camp, they have shown aggressiveness to the ball, good speed and that experience will hopefully make a big difference this season."
Along with returning coaches Turner and Walsh, the Spartans have added Todd Williams as offensive and defensive line coach, Dave Chisholm is offensive co-ordinator and Paul Quinlan looks after special teams.
"We have a great coaching staff, and we really thank them for volunteering their time to this football program," added Turner.
