In Moncton Football Association
SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside Cox and Palmer Atom Spartans are preparing for the upcoming season in the Moncton Football Association (MFA).
This will be the second season for the Spartans in the MFA as there is currently no competitive football for this age group on P.E.I.
The Spartans, who are in the midst of a busy training camp, will play their first league game on Sept. 8.
Summerside has 12 returning players from last year's team, and currently has a roster of 22 players.
The Spartans play 10-man football with four downs. This includes a mandatory pass in the first three downs.
"The kids are excited to play football,” said Spartans assistant coach and defensive co-ordinator Paul Walsh. “We have a great mix of speed and size this season, and it should be lots of fun watching this team play.”
Last season, the Spartans won three games in the very competitive Atom Division of the MFA, which includes New Brunswick teams Sackville, Riverview, Moncton, Salisbury and Dieppe, along with Amherst, N.S.

"From what the coaching staff has witnessed here in training camp to date, we have the makings of a very good team, which will be able to compete with the best teams in Eastern New Brunswick,” added Walsh.
The Spartans will play three home games at Eric Johnston Field, with the first one scheduled in mid-September.
