In provincial soccer final
CHARLOTTETOWN – The West Prince Storm suffered a heart-breaking loss in the championship game of the P.E.I. Subway Under-16 Girls Soccer League (Premier Division) here at UPEI on Tuesday night.
West Prince was just seconds away from winning the provincial title and earning P.E.I.’s berth in the Canadian championships in October, but the Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals had other ideas. The Royals scored the tying goal in the 90th minute to send the game into extra time.
The game eventually went to a shootout, which had the fans on the edge of their seats. After saves from both keepers, the cross bar proved to be the difference. West Prince’s fourth penalty kick went off the bar while the Royals converted on their opportunity for the victory.
West Prince opened the game’s scoring on an own goal in the 76th minute. That set the stage for the dramatic finish to regulation time as Emma Clark sent Sarah Sear through to finish on a breakaway. Clark had collected the ball from the midfield, and sent the ball over the Storm defence for Sear to use her speed and run on to and finish.
