SUMMERSIDE -- Hannah Taylor’s international wrestling debut was a success. The 15 year-old Summerside girl pinned Belarus wrestler Palin Tsan in her first match at the FILA Cadet World Championship in Zrenjanin, Serbia this morning. The final score was 8-5 for Canada.
There’s not much rest for Taylor in the single elimination championship. She’s in a quarter-final match later this morning against Anzhelika Chshelchkova from Kazakhstan.
“She dominated,” said Taylor’s mom, Bonnie who watched the opening match live on video stream. She hasn’t spoken to her daughter and, although she sent her messages, she knows Hannah has her phone turned off.
“She’s focused; she’s there to do her job," said Bonnie who added she will likely only get a call from her daughter once her wrestling day is done.
Taylor actually fell behind 5-0 in the first round, but some points were disputed and she went into the second round down only 3-0 before pinning her opponent for the win.
Mom admitted there’s "quite a bit of traffic” on her phone this morning with calls and texts wondering how Hannah is doing.
“I was pretty excited,” she said as she watched the match and she imagines she was more nervous than her daughter.
