Series resumes in S’side on Thursday

MIRAMICHI, N.B. – Chris Caissy scored late in the third period to lift the Summerside Western Capitals to a 2-1 playoff win over the Miramichi Timberwolves on Tuesday night.

Caissy’s goal, which was set up by Alex Gallant, with 4:58 remaining in the third period broke a 1-1 tie.

The Caps now lead the best-of-seven Roger Meek Division semifinal series in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) 2-0.

The teams return to Summerside for Game 3 on Thursday, with the opening faceoff at Eastlink Arena set for 7 p.m.

Before 968 fans at the Miramichi Civic Centre, the Capitals’ Jon Aubertin opened the game’s scoring at 4:14 of the second period. Caissy and JP Harvey set up that goal.

The score remained 1-0 until 14:39 of the middle frame, when Cole MacDonald connected for a power-play goal to pull the Timberwolves even. Danny Hicks and Billy Gaston drew helpers.

Overall, the Capitals held a 35-22 shots-on-goal advantage, including 12-6 and 15-9 margins in the second and third periods. Winning goaltender was Jacob Riley while Julien Daigle was between the pipes for the Timberwolves.

Each team was assessed just two minor penalties. The first period was penalty-free.

The game’s three stars were:

1. Jon Aubertin (Caps), 2. Chris Caissy (Caps), 3. Julien Daigle (Timberwolves).

The Capitals won Game 1 on home ice by a 4-2 count on Sunday afternoon.
