ALBERTON -- Giving up a steal of four proved costly for the host P.E.I. rink from Summerside Legion Branch 5 at the Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion Curling Championship Tuesday morning.
Skip Mel Bernard’s final stone just refused to curl and sailed through the house, giving the Steve Eder rink from the Fairview Legion in Halifax a big lead. Teams traded singles through the next six ends before Bernard was able to put a deuce on the board in eight to cut Nova Scotia’s lead to 7-5. Elder drew the four-foot against three P.E.I. stones to count one in nine, and he ran back one of his own guards with his final stone in 10 to eliminate one of the two P.E.I. stones in the house, bringing the game to a conclusion with one P.E.I. stone still to throw.
P.E.I. falls to 2-2 while Nova Scotia/Nunavut moves to 3-1 in the standings, both with two games left to play.
Manitoba/NW Ontario continue to hold the lead with a 4-1 record following a Tuesday morning 6-3 victory over British Columbia/Yukon (1-3). They have this afternoon’s draw off, giving Nova Scotia/Nunavut and Quebec (3-2) a chance to catch up.
In the other game at Western Community Curling Club Tuesday morning, Quebec scored a 9-2 win over winless Newfoundland and Labrador (0-4).
