Danny Chiasson scored two goals and assisted on another, and Mitch Maynard earned a pair of assists, to lead the Capitals to a 4-3 home-ice victory over the Amherst Ramblers at Eastlink Arena.
It was a big afternoon for Chiasson, who moved into the lead atop the league’s scoring race. Chiasson, who has 84 points on 33 goals and 51 assists, moved two points ahead of the Truro Bearcats’ Kyle Morrison (33-49).
Wes Herrett and JP Harvey also scored for the Capitals.
Kody Orr, Jacob Conrad and Serge Boisvert scored for Amherst, which scored two goals in the final minute of the third period to make it a one-goal game.
Caps goaltender Jacob Riley was solid in stopping 25 of 28 shots in recording his 22nd victory of the season. Chase Marchand finished with 31 saves for the Ramblers.
The Caps, who have clinched first-place overall in the 11-team league and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, improved to 42-7-2-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses). The Ramblers fell to 32-13-4-2.
The Capitals will close out the regular season with a road game against the Campbellton Tigers on Friday night. The Caps will open the best-of-seven Roger Meek Division semifinal series against the Miramichi Timberwolves at Eastlink Arena on Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m.
