RUSTICO - The Southside Lynx took a 2-0 lead in their semifinal series of the Razzy’s Junior C playoffs on Tuesday night, with a 5-2 win over the North River Flames.
In a spirited affair that saw 101 penalty minutes handed out, multi-point games from Rob Miller, Willie McGuigan and Andy Murphy got the Lynx out of penalty trouble and onto the scoreboard.
North River opened the scoring midway through the first period on a goal by Ryan McGuigan, with assists going to Lal Hennessey and Justin Holroyd.
Exactly five minutes later, Marshall Thomas would tie the game for Southside, burying an unassisted goal.
Neither team could muster any offence through most of the second period, until Chad Murphy scored to break the deadlock with three minutes remaining, assisted by Miller.
The Lynx would add to their lead in the third, when Miller netted an unassisted goal early in the period.
A minute later, Willie McGuigan would bang home a goal from Murphy and Alex MacLeod.
Shortly after, things turned chippy when North River’s Jeremy MacAulay squared off with Southside’s Tyler Allen. When play resumed after the fight, Flames tough guy Max MacDonald dropped the gloves with Evan Harding. All four players were ejected from the game.
North River would draw within two late in the third on a goal by Keir Campbell, but the Lynx would hang on, with Cody Dawson adding another Southside goal with just over a minute left.
Picking up the win in goal for the Lynx was John Miller, while Kurt Willis took the loss for the Flames.
The Lynx look to take a commanding lead in the series when they head to Crapaud on Friday for game three.
