Midget A basketball titles go east

SUMMERSIDE – The 2013 provincial midget A basketball titles went eastward this weekend as the Vernon River Mustangs girls and Morell Marlin boys claimed the championships at Summerside Intermediate School on Saturday.

The Vernon River Mustangs outscored the Souris Spartans 14-4 in the fourth quarter to claim their first ever P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) Provincial Midget A Girls Basketball championship. Tournament MVP Zoie Farish scored 12 points for the Mustangs while Meghan Stewart scored 10 points for the Spartans.

The Morell Marlins are the 2013 PEISAA Midget A Boys Basketball champions. Shane Pendergast, the tournament MVP, scored 18 points for the Marlins followed by tournament all-star Ethan Craig with 14 points. The Montague Storm were led by their two tournament all-stars, Jake Banks and Kyle Parlee with 17 points each.

The Summerside Intermediate Owls outscored the Miscouche Mustangs 12-2 in the third quarter to cruise to a 31-27 bronze-medal victory in the midget A basketball championships. Abby Malaney had 10 points for the Owls and Jessica Gillis and Baylee DesRoches each had eight points each for the Mustangs.

The Kensington Intermediate Torches outscored the Miscouche Mustangs 38-14 in the second half to claim the bronze medal in midget A boys basketball championships.

Kensington’s Kyle Pinkston led all scorers with 24 points and Jordan Montgomery chipped in with 18 points. Miscouche was led by Cyler Vos with eight points.

Tournament all-stars were Lauryn Reeves from Summerside Intermediate, Dante Perry of Miscouche, Kelsey MacKinnon of Miscouche, Kyle Pinkston of Kensington Intermediate, Jasmine Laybolt of Souris, Jake Banks of Montague, Meghan Stewart of Souris, Kyle Parlee of Montague, Carley MacLean of Vernon River, Ethan Craig of Morell and MVPs Zoie Farish of Vernon River and Shane Pendergast of Morell.
