Regals, Matrix advance with OT victories

In P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League playoffs

ALBERTON – The Alberton Regals and Mid-Isle Matrix each recorded double-overtime wins on Thursday night to advance in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League playoffs.

The Regals got by the Sherwood Falcons 4-3 in the fifth and deciding game of their quarter-final series, and the Matrix pulled out a 3-2 decision over the Kings County Kings to clinch the best-of-five series in four games.

The fourth-seeded Regals will now face the first-place Pownal Red Devils in one best-of-five semifinal series. The Matrix, who finished the regular season in third place, will take the second-seeded Charlottetown Abbies in the other semifinal.

The Abbies will host Game 1 at UPEI on Sunday at 8 p.m., with the Matrix hosting Game 2 at the APM Centre in Cornwall on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).

The Regals-Red Devils’ series will get underway at the Pownal Sports Centre on Monday at 7:50 p.m. The Regals will host Game 2 at the Jacques Cartier Arena in Alberton on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

No other information was available on Thursday’s two games at press time.
