In PEISAA senior basketball championships

SUMMERSIDE – The Three Oaks Axewomen and Westisle boys have advanced to their respective gold-medal games in the P.E.I. School Athletic Association senior basketball championships.

The two Prince County schools met in back-to-back games at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside on Friday night. The Axewomen topped Westisle 55-38 in AAA girls’ action, and the Wolverines returned the favour with a 66-46 victory in AA boys’ action.

The medal games will take place in Charlottetown next week.

Axewomen 55 Wolverines 38

The Axewomen built a 44-14 lead at the break, and never looked back.

Charlotte Thompson (12), Becky Clark (10) and Jaime MacLean (8) keyed the Axewomen’s attack.

Breeanna Gallant had a game-high 14 points to lead the Wolverines, who also received seven from Amanda Gallant and six from Megan Moore.

Three Oaks will face the Colonel Gray Colonels in a rematch of last year’s final in the gold-medal game at UPEI on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Colonels defeated the Charlottetown Rural Raiders 71-46 in a semifinal game on Thursday afternoon.

The result of the senior AAA boys’ semifinal between Colonel Gray and Three Oaks was unavailable at press time.

Wolverines 66 Axemen 46

Kenan Wilkie’s 30-point performance accounted for almost half of the Westisle points. Austin Luxton and Corey Buchanan each added a dozen points to the Wolverines’ attack.

For the Axemen, Andrew Rafuse (15), Brady Arsenault (12) and Matt Oram (10) all scored in double digits.

Westisle was in front 33-25 at halftime.

The Wolverines will now take on the winner Friday night’s Kensington-Souris semifinal in the winner-take-all championship game at Holland College on Monday at 8 p.m. The result of the Kensington-Souris game was unavailable at press time.

Also the results of the two senior AA girls’ semifinals between Kensington vs. Colonel Gray No. Two and Souris vs. Bluefield were also unavailable at press time.
