Series returns to UPEI for Game 3 on Monday

CHARLOTTETOWN – It will be rematch of last year as the UPEI Panthers meet the top-ranked UNB Varsity Reds in a best-of-five semifinal series in the Atlantic University Sport Men’s Hockey Conference.

The matchup was determined on Sunday night, when the Acadia Axemen edged the Moncton Blue Eagles 4-3 in double overtime. A Moncton win would have meant UPEI would have faced the second-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies, who will now face the Axemen.

The Panthers swept the St. Francis X-Men in the best-of-three quarter-final series while the Varsity Reds had a first-round bye.

The Panthers will travel to Fredericton, N.B., for the first two games of the series on Thursday and Friday. Game 3 is back at MacLauchlan Arena on Monday. If necessary, Game 4 will also be at The Mac on Tuesday.

Should the series go the distance, Game 5 will be back in Fredericton on Thursday, Feb. 28. All games will start at 7 p.m.

UNB, which swept UPEI in last year’s semifinal, won all four head-to-head meetings with the Panthers this season. Three of those games were decided by one goal.
