KENSINGTON – The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers are heading into the Island Junior Hockey League playoffs on a winning note.

The Vipers closed out their regular-season schedule with a 7-2 triumph over the Holland College Hurricanes on Sunday night.

The Vipers finished atop the five-team league standings at 19-6-1 (won-lost-overtime/shootout loss). They will face the winner of the best-of-five quarter-final series between the fifth-place Hurricanes (9-16-1) and fourth-place Montague Maniacs (11-14-0) in the best-of-seven semifinal.

Before 185 fans at Community Gardens, Brett Hogan led the Vipers with five points – three goals and two assists. Spencer Montgomery (2-2), Tyler Doyle and Brandon Gallant rounded out Kensington’s scoring. Rodney MacFadyen (2), Ryan Kelly, Kyle Doucette and Ty Price chipped in with helpers.

Eric Locke and Matt Patterson countered for the Hurricanes.

The Vipers held period leads of 3-1 and 3-2 before putting the game out of reach with four unanswered third-period goals. Overall, Kensington outshot Holland College 56-25.

Logan Reid picked up the goaltending win.

The league’s regular-season finale will be played Tuesday as Montague visits the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings (13-11-1). The opening faceoff at the Evangeline Recreation Centre is set for 7:30 p.m.
