The best-of-five quarter-final series is now tied 1-1, with Game 3 at Community Gardens in Kensington on Sunday at 5:10 p.m. It was incorrectly reported in Saturday’s print edition of the Journal Pioneer that the Kings won the game in overtime.
Aaron Nunn and Evan Noonan netted regulation-time goals for the Matrix. Tyler Rose and Tanner Nicholson answered for the Kings.
Kings County led 1-0 after the first period, and the teams were tied 1-1 after the second.
Cameron Visser earned the goaltending win, and Nolan Compton was in goal for the Kings.
In other playoff action, the host Charlottetown Abbies downed the Summerside Capitals 9-5 at Simmons Sport Centre on Saturday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep.
Nick MacDonald’s six-point effort – four goals and two assists – led the way for the Abbies, who received two goals and an assist from Matt Lange. Single goals came off the sticks of Drew Gallant, Mark MacMillan and Keita Morikoshi.
Five different players – Joel Arsenault, Ryan Campbell, Brandon Adams, Spencer Groom and Chasse Gallant – answered for the Capitals, who trailed 1-0 after the first period and 5-3 at the end of 40 minutes.
Winning goaltender was Alex Dunne.
Regals host Game 3
Meanwhile, the Western Regals edged the Sherwood Falcons 3-2 in Game 3 of their quarter-final series at the Jacques Cartier Arena in Alberton on Saturday night.
The Regals now lead the series 2-1, and the Falcons will look to continue the trend of the home team winning in Game 4 at the Cody Banks Arena on Monday at 8 p.m.
Nathan Handrahan, Carson Adams and Chase McCue scored for the Regals while Connor Smith netted both Sherwood goals.
The first period was scoreless, and the teams went into the second intermission tied 1-1.
Rowgan Barbour earned the goaltending win. Jeremy Ramsay tended goal for the Falcons.
