Kings upset Matrix in Game 1
ALBERTON – The Western Regals and Kings County Kings opened their respective best-of-five quarter-final playoff series in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League on a winning note Tuesday night.
The Regals doubled the Sherwood Falcons 4-2 while the Kings, who finished the regular season in sixth place, upset the third-place Mid-Isle Matrix 4-3.
The Summerside Capitals open their quarter-final matchup against the Charlottetown Abbies at Simmons Sport Centre on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.
Regals 4 Falcons 2
At the Jacques Cartier Arena in Alberton, Curklan Fraser scored twice while Evan Millman and Calvin McRae added single goals. McRae’s goal into an empty Sherwood goal sealed the win. Brett Aylward (2), Brendan Smith, Jake Getson and Chase McCue chipped in with assists.
Jordan Jewel (1-1) and Lucas Holmes countered for the Falcons. Tanner MacLean and Brodie Watts added assists.
The Regals led 2-1 after the first and second periods.
Rowgan Barbour earned the goaltending win over Jeremy Ramsay.
The Falcons are scheduled to host Game 2 at the Cody Banks Arena on Thursday at 8:20 p.m., with Game 3 back in Alberton on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
The Regals finished the regular season in fourth place while the Falcons were fifth.
Kings 4 Matrix 3
At the APM Centre in Cornwall, the visiting Kings held period leads of 3-0 and 4-2.
Four different players – Kenny McKinnon, Kevin MacLeod, Drew Christensen and Jarrod MacAdam – lit the lamp for the Kings. Tanner Nicholson (2), John Duncan and Ben Lanigan set up the goals.
Matt Dickeson, Ryan Murray and Spencer McAllister replied for the Matrix. Alex Wood (2), Nick MacPhail, Liam O’Connor and Easton Smith earned assists.
Nolan Compton picked up the goaltending win over Cameron Visser.
The series resumes at the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris on Friday at 7:55 p.m. Game 3 is slated for Community Gardens in Kensington on Sunday at 5:10 p.m.
