Series opens Wednesday night

CHARLOTTETOWN – The UPEI Panthers will meet the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in the best-of-three quarter-final series to open the Atlantic University Sport Men’s Hockey Conference playoffs.

Game 1 is in Antigonish, N.S., on Wednesday, with Game 2 back at MacLauchlan Arena on the UPEI campus on Friday. If necessary, Game 3 will be back in Antigonish on Sunday. All games will start at 7 p.m.

The Panthers finished the regular season in fifth place at 15-11-2 (won-lost-overtime losses), two points back of the fourth-place X-Men (16-10-2).

UPEI goes into the series having won seven of their last 10 regular-season games while the X-Men are 5-5 in their last 10.

The Acadia Axemen (17-9-2) and Moncton Blue Eagles (12-10-6) will meet in the other quarter-final series.

The first-place UNB Varsity Reds (23-5-0), who are coached by Bedeque native Gardiner MacDougall, and second-place Saint Mary’s Huskies (18-7-3) received byes into the semifinals.
