Rod MacDonald scored singles in the ninth and 10th ends to force the extra end, before MacKenzie scored one with a nose hit for the victory.
“It was on the straight side of the ice so it was a difficult spot, but Eddie threw really good weight and we ended up making the shot,” said second stone Alex MacFadyen of the Charlottetown Curling Complex rink.
“It was a nail-biter. . . both teams were playing really well.”
MacKenzie jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three ends by scoring a single in the second and a deuce in the third. MacDonald tied it with a triple in the fifth, but fell behind when MacKenzie scored singles in the sixth and eighth ends to take a 5-2 lead.
“We’re lucky to qualify No. 1. We had to work for it,” said MacFadyen, a Summerside native.
The rink, which includes third stone and Summerside native Anson Carmody and lead Sean Ledgerwood, plays MacDonald again in the 1-vs.-2 playoff game on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The winner goes to Sunday’s 4 p.m. final while the loser plays in Sunday’s 11 a.m. semifinal.
MacDonald beat Mike Gaudet’s Charlottetown rink 11-8 on Friday night to advance. Trailing 7-5 through seven ends, Gaudet scored a triple in the eighth end to take the lead.
MacDonald bounced back with four in the ninth to win it.
Gaudet plays Robert Campbell on Saturday in the third qualifier final at 11 a.m.
Campbell defeated Robert Shaw 8-7 in an extra end.
Blair Weeks plays Jamie Newson in the fourth qualifier at 11 a.m.
Newson stayed alive with a 7-6 victory over Mel Bernard’s Silver Fox rink.
