At Dairytown Classic Basketball Tournament

SUSSEX, N.B. – The Three Oaks Axewomen came up just short in the championship game of the Dairytown Classic basketball tournament here on Saturday.

The Axewomen dropped a 61-51 decision to the host Sussex Sonics, who captured their first-ever Dairytown Classic tournament.

Charlotte Thompson led the Axewomen in the championship game with a 12-point effort. Michaela Walker, who was named to the tournament’s all-star team, added nine and Jaime MacLean chipped in with seven.

Overall, Three Oaks finished the three-day tournament with a 2-2 (won-lost) record.

The Axewomen defeated the Rothesay High Red Hawks 53-47 in their opening game on Thursday. Becky Clark (13) and Laura O’Neill (12) were the Axewomen’s top scorers.

Later that evening, Three Oaks lost a close 54-50 decision to the Sonics. Walker (13) and Clark (8) were the Axewomen’s top scorers.

In the semifinals on Friday night, the Axewomen scored a 60-57 come-from-behind victory over the Kennebecasis Valley Crusaders. Clark (13) and Jessica Gillis (10) were the top point-getters for Three Oaks.

Clark was named the defensive player of the tournament.

The Axewomen will host their annual Sweetheart tournament at Three Oaks this weekend. Play begins Friday and concludes on Saturday afternoon. For a preview of this tournament, be sure to check out Wednesday’s School Sports Page in the Journal Pioneer.
