Host Red Wings in rare matinee at Gardens

KENSINGTON – The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers have an opportunity to clinch the regular-season championship in the Island Junior Hockey League on Sunday.

Topics :
Red Wings , Sherwood AS Scrap Metal Falcons , Summerside Western Capitals , Community Gardens

The Vipers, who need just one win to secure home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, will host their arch-rivals, Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings, in a rare matinee at Community Gardens. Fans are asked to please note the start time for Super Bowl Sunday’s game is 1 p.m.

The Vipers, who are 15-6-1 (won-lost-overtime/shootout losses), come into the game on a modest two-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Red Wings are still pushing for second place and home-ice advantage in the league semifinals. Thus, both teams will be going hard for the win.

The Red Wings (12-10-1), who are five points back of the Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons (14-9-2) can finish second if they win their remaining three games and Sherwood loses its finale at Kensington.

The Red Wings and Vipers have developed likely the most intense hockey rivalry on P.E.I. With the Summerside Western Capitals not playing their traditional Sunday afternoon game this week, a big crowd is expected to see a rematch of last year’s championship series.

Rookie Grant Grady will get the start in goal for the Vipers, who will be without the services of forward Jeremy Jollimore until at least the playoffs.
