UPEi has won seven of eight games since Christmas

CHARLOTTETOWN – It was all UPEI Panthers in an important Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey game on Friday night.

The Panthers, who have now won seven of eight regular-season games since the Christmas break, scored three short-handed goals en route to an 8-2 thumping of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men before 1,049 fans at MacLauchlan Arena.

The win moves the Panthers into a fourth-place tie with the X-Men. Both teams are 13-9-2 (won-lost-overtime losses).

Dana Fraser and Chris Desousa each had two goals and two assists to lead the Panthers, who jumped out to period leads of 4-0 and 5-2. Jordan Knox (1-1) of Skinners Pond, Mike MacIsaac (1-1) of O’Leary, Tyler Brown (1-1) and Colin Beck rounded out UPEI’s scoring. Matthew Maione added three assists while Alex Wall, Cole MacMillan and Nathan McQuaid had single helpers.

Ryan Fortune and Steven Kuhn countered for the X-Men.

Overall, the Panthers outshot the X-Men 42-20. Wayne Savage picked up the goaltending win.

The Panthers will host the Saint Mary’s Huskies at MacLauchlan Arena on Saturday. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
