Defenceman Wes Herrett scored his first goal in 40 regular-season games to help the Capitals to a 5-3 road win over the Dieppe Commandos. It was the Capitals’ 13th win in a row in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League), and improved their league-leading record to 32-6-2-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) while the Commandos dropped to 19-14-1-3.

The Capitals will look to extend their winning streak on Saturday night in Miramichi, N.B., against the Timberwolves. The Caps then return to Eastlink Arena to host the Woodstock Slammers on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Before 257 fans at the Arthur J. LeBlanc Arena, Jonathan Aubertin scored twice and assisted on another to lead the Capitals’ attack. Mitch Maynard (1-1) and Craig MacLauchlan also dented the twine for the Caps, who received assists from Jason Seed (2), Scott Trask, Patrick Volpe and JP Harvey.

Caps make it 13 wins in a row -

Joel Blanchard, Zack Cahill and Ryan Langan replied for the Commandos.

The Capitals led 2-0 after the first period, and Herrett’s goal at 8:18 of the middle frame made it 3-0. The Commandos fought back with a pair of goals to cut the Caps’ lead to 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Aubertin scored at 7:32 of the third period to restore the Caps’ two-goal lead at 4-2, but Langan answered right back at 8:10 to make it a one-goal game. The score remained 4-3 until MacLauchlan sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

The shots-on-goal totals were even 34-34. Jacob Riley picked up the goaltending decision over Connor Wilkinson.

Referee Mario Maillet called six minors against each team.
