Matrix, Abbies pick up wins Saturday

In P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League

ALBERTON – The Mid-Isle Matrix and Charlottetown Abbies picked up wins in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League on Saturday.

The Abbies edged the Sherwood Falcons 4-3 in a matinee, and the Matrix downed the host Western Regals 5-2 in an evening contest.

At the Jacques Cartier Arena, the Matrix jumped out to 2-1 and 4-1 leads over the Alberton-based Regals.

Spencer McAllister scored a hat trick and picked up an assist to lead the Matrix offence. Matt Dickieson and Jacob Stewart also lit the lamp for Mid-Isle, which improved its record to 15-7-4 (won-lost-tied). Evan Noonan chipped in with two assists while singles went to Aaron Nunn, Brandon Bond, Drew Grady and Braeden Stewart.

Jeff Gaudet and Nathan Handrahan replied for the Regals, who were scheduled to face the Summerside Capitals at the Evangeline Recreation Centre on Sunday evening. Jason Gallant, Brendan Shea, Carson Adams and Ryan McNeill earned assists.

Cameron Visser earned the goaltending decision over Rowgan Barbour.

Abbies 4 Falcons 3

At Simmons Sport Centre, Tyson Blue (2), Nick MacDonald (1-1) and Josh Scott dented the twine for the Abbies (17-7-2). Patrick Smith had two assists.

Lucas Holmes (2) and Tyler MacDonald countered for the Falcons (10-13-3).

The Abbies led 1-0 after the first period, and the teams were tied 2-2 following 40 minutes of play.

Zach Geldert earned the goaltending win, and Jeremy Ramsay was between the pipes for the Falcons.
