Take winning streak into Yarmouth

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – The Summerside Western Capitals are going into a showdown between the two division leaders in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) on a hot streak.

The Capitals defeated the Bridgewater Lumberjacks 6-2 on Friday night to extend their winning streak to 11 games. The Caps, who improved to 30-6-2-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) atop the Roger Meek Division and the 11-team league’s overall standings, will visit the Eastlink Division-leading Yarmouth Mariners (27-7-1-0) on Saturday night.

At the Bridgewater Memorial Arena, Justin Rasmussen scored two goals in his return to the Caps’ lineup. Scott Trask (1-1), Alex Gallant, Chris Caissy and Colton Parsons also scored for the Capitals, who received assists from Mitch Maynard (2), Luke Warner, Jason Seed, Craig MacLauchlan, Thomas Stavert, JP Harvey, Jordan Buchanan, Spencer MacDonald and Danny Chiasson. Overall, 14 Capitals recorded points.

Shawn Boudreau opened the game’s scoring at 18:13 of the first period to send the Lumberjacks into the first intermission ahead 1-0. However, the Caps responded with four goals in the first 6:44 of the second period to take control of the game. Cody Coffin of Souris also scored for the Lumberjacks (7-31-0-2).

The final shots-on-goal totals were 36-23 in favour of the Capitals, including 12-7 and 15-4 advantages in the first two periods.

Caps goaltender Jacob Riley earned his 17th win of the season while Jacob Edwards was between the pipes for Bridgewater.

Referee Jon Langille called five minors and one 10-minute misconduct against the Capitals while the Lumberjacks were called for just one minor.

The Capitals’ next home game is against the Woodstock Slammers on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m.

    I would like all the coach haters of last year to come out of the wood work and eat some crow. Where are you, coach haters? Coach Bill is the best coach on the Island and will have a Major Junior or pro job soon. Too all the people that bad mouthed the decision to hire him....all these wins looks good on you!
