Abbies top Mid-Isle Matrix in Saturday action

ALBERTON – The Pownal Red Devils put an end to the Western Regals’ five-game winning streak in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League on Saturday night.

Patrick Cummiskey scored twice to lead the Red Devils to a 4-2 road victory.

In another league game on Saturday afternoon, the Charlottetown Abbies received goals from five different players in a 5-3 victory over the Mid-Isle Matrix.

At the Jacques Cartier Arena, Harrison Hayden (1-2) and Zach Mella also scored for the league-leading Red Devils, who are now 15-4-4 (won-lost-tied). Johnny MacKenzie (2), Jackson Atkinson (2) and Donald Duffy added assists.

Nathan Handrahan (1-1) and Curklan Fraser answered for the Regals (10-10-4). The Alberton-based Regals also received a single assist from Jeff Gaudet.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and Pownal led 2-1 after the second.

James Duffy earned the goaltending decision over Kelton Ellis.

The Regals’ next home game is against the Matrix on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m.

Abbies 5 Matrix 3

At Simmons Sport Centre in Charlottetown, the Abbies erupted for four third-period goals.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period, and the Matrix took a 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.

Nick MacDonald’s four points – one goal and three assists – sparked the Abbies’ attack.

Matt Lange (1-2), Tyson Blue, Josh Scott and Drew Gallant rounded out scoring for Charlottetown (15-7-2). Seb Burns, Ryan Lawless, Quinton Gorman and James Lantz added assists.

Ryan Murray (1-1), Matt Dickieson and Easton Smith replied for the Matrix (14-6-4), who has lost three games in a row. Tyler Sark, Spencer McAllister, Nick MacPhail and Liam O’Connor drew helpers.
