Caps trounce Shipbuilders

SUMMERSIDE – After trading goals to tie the game 1-1 midway through the second period, the floodgates opened as the Summerside Western Capitals trounced the Halifax Shipbuilders 7-1 in front of 1,231 fans Saturday at Credit Union Place.

Thomas Stavert opened the scoring at 9:16 of the middle frame of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League contest. Spencer MacDonald and Zach Beaton picked up assists on the play.

The Shipbuilders tied the game about a minute later when Justin Thomas beat Capitals goalie Kevin Baillie at 10:56 on assists from Darcy Burley and Roland Provencal.

JP Harvey scored the game winner just under a minute later at 11:53. Zach Beaton put the homeside up 3-1 before the period was over.

Mitch Maynard scored on Halifax netminder Jeff Arkin just over a minute into the third and was followed up five minutes later when Jonathan Aubertin found the back of the net for his first of two goals in a four-point night.

Christopher Caissy made it 6-1 at 14:07 and Aubertin ended the barrage short-handed at 18:14.

Summerside piled the rubber at the net, outshooting the Shipbuilders 61-15.

In addition to Aubertin’s four-point night, Partick Volpe picked up three assits, Maynard finished with a goal and two assists, Stavert, Beaton and Harvey each had a goal and an assist, while MacDonald had a pair of helpers.
