The 15th annual Edd McNeill Memorial hockey tournament, which attracted large and loud appreciative crowds to The Plex in Slemon Park, was held recently.
The Capitals, led by Rankin Noye’s two goals, defeated West Prince 4-1 in the championship game to complete tournament play 5-0-1 (won-lost-tied).
In the first semifinal game, the Western Warriors got some revenge on the Kings County Kings with a 5-2 victory to advance to the final game. The Kings had defeated the Warriors 4-1 earlier in the tournament.
In the other semifinal game, the Capitals beat the Gulf Storm 5-2 in a well-played contest that was tied 2-2 at the halfway point.
Sid McNeill, grandson of the late Edd McNeill, led the Capitals’ charge with three goals and two assists versus the Gulf Storm.
In the championship game, the Capitals jumped out to an early lead from a top-corner shot off the stick of Ethan Gallant. Zach Phillips and Will Smith set up the goal.
Sid McNeill gave the home team a two-goal lead as his hard wrist shot from the blue-line eluded screened Western goaltender Jarvis MacRae. Cade Butler made a nice pass to McNeill for the lone assist.
Marshall Gallant pulled the Warriors to within a goal at the start of the third period as his nice shot beat the Capitals’ Riley Molyneaux, who was named the top goaltender of the tournament. Colby Perry picked up the lone helper on Gallant’s goal.
That was as close as the Warriors would come as Noye scored on a great wrist shot midway through the third period off a nice pass from Cody McCormack. A few minutes later, Cade Butler earned his second assist of the game as he set up Noye for his second goal to round out the scoring.
The Capitals were presented with Edd McNeill championship rings, along with The Edd Cup.
