At Friday’s key divisional game vs. Moncton

SUMMERSIDE – The last time the Summerside Storm played a home game, Eastlink Arena was rocking in the fourth quarter.

Although the Storm staged a come-from-behind 106-96 victory over the Saint John Mill Rats on Nov. 9, it was the atmosphere in the building during the National Basketball League of Canada contest that night that caught the attention of a lot of people.

“We love that (crowd involvement), and feed off that energy of the fans,” said Storm shooting forward Chris Cayole, who is one of three returnees on this year’s team.

Examples of fans getting into the game during the second half against Saint John included loud cheers when the Storm would sink key baskets, especially three-pointers; a loud chorus of boos when they disagreed on foul calls against the home team, and booing and making noise in an attempt to distract Saint John players shooting free throws. That’s not to mention a loud ovation that was given to the Storm at the conclusion of the game.

“I feel the fans were excited for us to come back, which was a big reason for us to come back,” said Cayole. “As a basketball player, it (home crowd support) makes playing easier and fun. That’s what you play for.”

Next home game

The next opportunity to check out the Storm at Eastlink Arena is Friday night – and it will be an important early-season contest.

The Storm will close out a stretch of five straight road games against the Moncton Miracles on Thursday night, and then returns home to host the back end of the home-and-home series that will determine the Atlantic Division lead.

The first-place Storm takes a 4-2 (won-lost) record into Thursday’s game, but the Miracles (4-3) can pull even with a win. The teams then return to Summerside on Friday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

Storm fans have a number of opportunities to purchase tickets for this game and others throughout the season.
