Ellsworth leads Canada to win

Team improves to 3-0 at Pan American Championship 



MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA – The Canadian Men's National Team improved its record to 3-0 (won-lost) with a 5-0 win over the Bahamas on Monday at the Pan American baseball championship.

Jason Hill of St. John's, NL, got the ball for Canada and pitched the first four innings, allowing one hit and striking out 11 batters.

Stonewall, Manitoba’s Brady Woods pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit while striking out six.

The Bahamas only managed two base runners the entire game with a hit in the second inning and a hit-by-pitch in the sixth.

Canada scored in the bottom of the second when Mark Johnson (Glencoe, ON) walked, was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Blair Ezekiel (Harbour Main, NL) and scored when a sharp ground ball off the bat of Ryan Boland (St. John's, NL) was misplayed by the shortstop.

Canada added three more runs in the third when Mathieu Roy (St-Gervais, QC) led off with a walk, was moved to second on a bunt by Bryan Abrey (Richmond, B.C.) and came home on a triple by Stephen Mullaley (Freshwater, NL).

Islander Jeff Ellsworth and Johnson then hit back-to-back RBI doubles to put Canada up 4-0 after three innings of play. Ellsworth later added a solo home run over the center field fence to add to the lead.

Ellsworth led Canada at the plate with a home run, a double and two RBIs, while Mullaley had an RBI triple. Johnson added a double, a walk and an RBI in the shutout win.

In the pitcher's circle, Hill and Woods combined for a one-hitter, striking out a combined 17.
