UPEI splits women's hockey games

FREDERICTON – The UPEI Panthers split two road games in Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey action over the weekend.

The Panthers scored a 3-2 overtime win over the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday, and then dropped a 4-2 decision to the St. Thomas Tommies on Sunday afternoon.

At Sackville, N.B., Jamielynn Donaldson scored the winning goal at 4:34 of overtime. Anya Weisser and Jenelle MacKenzie set up the goal.

Ferran Brown scored both UPEI goals during regulation time, with assists credited to MacKenzie, Amber Gaudette of Alberton and Kelsey O’Donnell.

Emily Van Diepen of Morell and Courtney King countered for the Mounties.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first and second periods.

Overall, the Panthers held a slim 36-35 shots-on-goal advantage. Kristy Dobson was the winning goaltender, and Jenelle Hulan was between the pipes for Mount Allison.

At Fredericton, N.B., the Tommies scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. UPEI netted the only goal of the second period to make it a 3-2 game heading into the final frame.

St. Thomas goaltender Julia Sharun also played a big role in the win, blocking 37 shots. Overall, UPEI outshot St. Thomas 39-26.

Kayla Blackmore (2), Katie Brewster and Cassidy McTaggart scored for St. Thomas.

MacKenzie and Jessie-Anne Howard answered for the Panthers (8-7-0). Gaudette, Laura Bradley and Keirsten Visser added assists.

UPEI visits Saint Mary’s on Saturday at 2 p.m.
