UPEI women split hockey games

ANTIGONISH, N.S. – The UPEI Panthers won and lost in Atlantic University Sport Women’s Hockey Conference action over the weekend.

The Panthers shut out the Saint Mary’s Huskies 5-0 on Saturday, but lost 7-1 to the host St. Francis Xavier X-Women on Sunday afternoon.

The weekend split leaves the Panthers in a third-place tie with Mount Allison at 6-5-0 (won-lost-overtime losses). Mount Allison sits at 5-4-2.

At Antigonish, N.S., the Panthers, despite being outshot 16-8, came out of the first period with a 1-0 lead on Laura Bradley’s goal. Brittney Perkins picked up the lone helper.

However, St. Francis Xavier exploded for five second-period goals, and tacked on two more in the final frame.

Janelle Parent (2-1), Rebecca Traversa (1-3), Alex Normore (1-1), Brittney Perkins (1-1), Jessica McCullough and Erin Brophy scored for St. Francis Xavier (9-2-0).

At Halifax, N.S., Kristy Dobson earned a 19-save shutout.

Keirsten Visser (2), Janelle MacKenzie (1-1), Amber Gaudette (1-1) and Jessica Rosenbaum scored for the Panthers, who held period leads of 4-0 and 5-0. Anja Weisser, Jamielynn Donaldson, Lindsay Oakes and Ferran Brown added assists.

The Huskies fell to 1-8-1.
