Host Halifax Rainmen at UPEI Sports Centre

SLEMON PARK – The Summerside Storm will begin a busy pre-season schedule in the National Basketball League of Canada on Friday.

Summerside Storm

The Storm will host the Halifax Rainmen at the UPEI Sports Centre in Charlottetown. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Storm has been practising for two weeks at the Canada Games Sports Centre in Slemon Park, and played an inter-squad game at Westisle Composite High School last Saturday.

“I’m really excited about it (Friday’s game),” said Storm head coach Joe Salerno. “That will be more of a measuring stick than the inter-squad game.

“It will give us an opportunity to really play some guys, and see guys in a little more intense situations. Hopefully, it will help me make some final decisions on the roster.”

The Storm will pay a return visit to the Rainmen on Sunday afternoon, and will play in Moncton, N.B., on Monday night. The Storm’s final pre-season game is against the Saint John Mill Rats at sold-out EastLink Arena on Wednesday evening.

“I like our pre-season schedule,” said Salerno. “Realistically, to have the chance to play four games in six days or so, it gives us a chance to look at some guys, and we’re playing in front of crowds and playing in big arenas against the competition to see where we stack up.

“Then it gives us, I think, eight days from our final pre-season game to our first regular-season game.”

The Storm will open the regular season with back-to-back home games against the Quebec Kebs and Mill Rats on Thursday, Nov. 3, and Friday, Nov. 4.

“The pre-season for us will be similar to the NFL,” said Salerno. “Friday night, I want to give a lot of guys we may have some questions about a lot of minutes.

“Slowly, as we progress in the pre-season with these exhibition games more and more, we’ll start getting, who I think, are potential starters or key players, more and more minutes.”

Salerno added that he hopes to have his roster close to finalized for the final pre-season contest.

Tonight’s game

Tonight’s game is a homecoming two Storm hopefuls – Doug McKinney and Sherone Edwards – who both played with the UPEI Panthers.

Salerno added that power forward Mike Williams, who has been nursing an ankle injury throughout training camp, is expected to dress.

“His ankle has been a steady rehab, and he was actually on the court for the first time (Monday) lightly,” added Salerno.

New player

Salerno confirmed the signing of guard Dwight Brewington, who is expected to arrive tonight.

Brewington, a third-round pick in the NBA D-League, started for Providence for two years in the Big East before transferring to Liberty.
