The final score of the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) exhibition game was 4-3.

Before 528 fans at Credit Union Place, Brandon Carter’s second goal of the game with 1:42 remaining in regulation time pulled the Caps even and forced a scoreless five-minute overtime period.

That set the stage for the shootout, where Devan Gunn and Isaac Jay scored for the Capitals on Woodstock goaltender Dylan McQuaid. Meanwhile, the Slammers’ Jeremie Ouellette and Philip Fife were unable to beat Caps goaltender Devan Cudmore.

Period scores

The Slammers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but two unanswered second-period goals by the Capitals off the sticks of Trevor Carmichael (6:23) and Carter (12:50) gave the home side a 2-1 advantage following 40 minutes. Carmichael’s tally came with the man advantage.

Fife pulled the Slammers even 4:22 into the third period, and Mason Russell put Woodstock back out in front at 8:50.

Ouellette’s power-play goal at 12:14 of the first period opened the scoring.

Craig MacLaughlan, Harrison Wood, Devan Gunn and Isaac Jay earned assists for the Capitals.

Overall, the Capitals outshot the Slammers 36-21, including a 7-1 margin in overtime. Cudmore stopped 11 of 12 shots he faced after relieving Alex Micalef, who gave up one goal on nine shots over the first half of the game.

Referee Thane Arsenault called nine minors and one fighting major against the Capitals. The Slammers picked up seven minors, one fighting major and one checking-from-behind game misconduct.

The game’s three stars were:

1. Devan Gunn (Capitals), 2. Trevor Carmichael (Capitals), 3. Simon Toner (Woodstock).

The Capitals (2-0) are back in action tonight on the road against the Dieppe Commandos. The Capitals continue their five-game exhibition schedule at home against Miramichi on Sunday. Game time is 7 p.m.
