CHARLOTTETOWN – Charles Aondo scored two minutes into the first overtime half to seal the victory 2-1 over Central Queens/ER Under-18 team to win the 2010 BellAliant Challenge Cup recently at UPEI. Winsloe West Royalty Irving Lions won their fifth consecutive Challenge Cup at the U18 boys level. Winsloe will represent P.E.I. at the BMO Club National Championships in Mount Pearl, NL, Oct. 6 to 11.
The match was played in front of a large crowd at UPEI turf. The game saw a scoreless first half with both teams feeling each other out.
Early in the second half Brandon Kok scored for the defending champion Winsloe on one of a number of good chances created by the Lions. With less than four minutes left to play in regulation time Central Queens capitalized on a defensive error when Taylor Weeks jumped on a loose ball to tie the match and send it to 30 minutes of overtime.
Winsloe regrouped at the break and came out quickly to regain the lead as Matt Capicotto fired a hard shot that was stopped by CQ/ER keeper Tyler Dykerman only to see the rebound picked up by the second year Winsloe striker Aondo, who fired the ball into the open goal.
After this go-ahead goal, Winsloe seemed to control the match, allowing no scoring opportunities for the opposition and creating scoring chances for themselves, but they were unable to connect for a third goal.
Winsloe U18 boys are the defending Canadian bronze medalists from 2009 in Edmonton, Alta., and also won a Canadian bronze medal at the 2007 championships in Fredericton, N.B.
