SUMMERSIDE – Ron Boyles of Fox Meadow and Paula Buote of Mill River lead the Championship divisions after Wednesday’s opening round of the 24th annual Hemphill GM Senior Open golf tournament.
The final 18 holes will be played at the Summerside Golf Club this morning. The popular tournament features men over 55 and women over 50.
Boyles’ 74 staked him to a one-shot lead over three golfers – Ron Garrett of Brudenell, defending champion Grant Somers of Summerside and Mel Bernard of Andersons Creek.
Boyles was a model of consistency, shooting identical 37s on the front and back nine. He finished with 13 pars, two birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey on the par-72 course.
Somers and Bernard had identical splits of 36 and 39 while Garrett had a 40 through holes one to nine, and shot a 35 for the 10-through-18 holes.
Ironically, Bernard, Garrett and Somers played in the same group.
Frank MacCormack of Summerside is three shots off the pace after shooting a 77 (37-40).
Buote holds a two-shot advantage over defending champion Myrna Millar of Summerside. Buote shot a 91 while Millar checked in with a 93.
Buote and Millar had identical 45s through holes one to nine. For holes 10 through 18, Buote had a 46 while Millar was 48.
Gaylene Lund of Summerside sits third, five shots behind Buote, at 96 (43-53).
Other division leaders
In other men’s play, Claude Belly (40-42) and Orville Mann (39-43), both of Summerside, shot identical rounds of 82 and share the lead atop the First Division. Linton Rogerson of Summerside is two strokes back at 84 (41-43).
In the Second Division, Sandy Brace of Eagles Glenn leads Dale Sabean of Summerside by three strokes. Brace fired an 87 (42-45) while Sabean registered a 90 (43-47). Three Summerside golfers – Ken Perry (51-41), Don Callbeck (46-46) and Martin Francoeur (46-46) – tied for third at 92.
Pat Barrett of Summerside has built a comfortable lead in the Women’s First Division. Barrett’s 99 (51-48) was nine shots better than Sunnydale’s Sandra Letton, who checked in with a 108 (52-56). Cathy Doucette of Summerside is third at 110 (54-56).
