P.E.I. under-17 boys lose to Nova Scotia

WINNIPEG - P.E.I. lost its opening game at the national 17-under basketball championships to Nova Scotia 86-72 here Tuesday.

Nova Scotia, which was led by Kyle Bell's 21 points, led 42-38 at halftime. Nova Scotia then outscored P.E.I. 44-34 in the second half.

Jacob Simmons of Belfast poured in 23 points to lead P.E.I. Matthew Daley (22) of Rustico and Sean Seviour (11) of Stratford were the Island's other top scorers.

Andrew Clark of Marshfield contributed 11 rebounds for P.E.I., which is scheduled to play Manitoba today.

 

15-under boys

At the national 15-under championships, the P.E.I. boys had Tuesday off after dropping its first game to Newfoundland and Labrador on Monday. The final score was 117-62.

Mitchell Hearn led Newfoundland and Labrador with 25 points while Noah Giddings of Stratford had nine and Andrew Rafuse of Summerside sank seven for P.E.I.

Mark Matheson of Summerside had a team-high 13 rebounds for P.E.I., which plays twice today. Manitoba will provide the opposition in a morning contest, and Saskatchewan will oppose P.E.I. in an early-evening contest.

This championship is also being held in Winnipeg.

 

15-under girls

At the national 15-under girls' championships in Toronto, P.E.I. was idle from game action Tuesday.

P.E.I., which was outscored 18-8 and 19-8 in the first and third quarters, dropped a 61-48 decision to Newfoundland and Labrador in its first game Monday.

Rosemary Stanoev had nine points to lead Newfoundland and Labrador. Rayelle Morrison of Charlottetown was P.E.I.'s top point-getter with 14. Jane McLaughlin of Souris chipped in with 13 and Erica Gillis of Summerside was credited with five.

Newfoundland and Labrador led 24-22 at the half.

P.E.I. plays Saskatchewan this morning and Manitoba tonight.
