Keith Tanton and a delegation of concerned neighbours want Summerside City Council to reconsider plans to build a new windfarm development in the citys North Drive area.
Tanton, representing his parents who live in the area, and other residents opposed to the development, will be appearing before council at tonights meeting, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
There are simply too many health and property issues for the plan to go ahead in its present form, said Tanton.
Minimum setback distances for wind turbines in countries such as France range from 1.6 km to two km., he said.
The distances being considered by the City in its plan are 400 to 500 metres, less than a third of recommended distances, said Tanton.
Ive also confirmed that Germany, with more wind turbines than any other country, has a setback of 1.6 km.
In other jurisdictions where giant wind farms have taken root, including parts of the Island, residents have complained of sleep problems, headaches, dizziness and other health issues, he said.
Residents within the 2 km. area proposed for Summerside's development number in the hundreds, estimated Tanton.
I am asking Mayor and Council not to vote in favour of the proposed rezoning. Please revisit the selection process and come up with a plan that does not situate this development in an area that will impact residents, wrote Tanton, in a recent letter to council.

If residents are so opposed to these turbines in the north part of the city, try bringing them to the south part, our harbour...why not put them out in the bay, lots of wind there and it is actually closer to the cities generating station on harvard street. Other countries have their turbines in water ways off of the land....why not do it here.
Lets not pass up this opportunity for generating clean energy. -

Matt & Phillip...First of all, these windmills will not reduce our cost of hydro since most of the power generated is being sold off island...and out power rates are actually going up as most other places...The concern is the distance from peoples homes. Putting them one third of the distance reccomended in other country's is a concern. I think Windmills are great, and if I could afford one, I would have a smaller version in my own backyard. There are health concerns, and if this was your backyard, where your children play, I'm sure your opinions would be different

Every single roof of every single building across the planet should already have solar panels on them. These same buildings should have electric heat and hot water along with a charging port for their electric vehicles. These are the things that SHOULD be, but arent, and there isnt one of you that can give me a reasonable answer as to why it isnt this way, AND BECAUSE OF MONEY ISNT A REASONABLE ANSWER. But its the same excuse for why the power these turbines create is being sold off island and not being used to ease the burden of islanders. MONEY MONEY MONEY.

Matt... Maybe if you knew where they were putting it you might be so quick to judge. when they mean our front yard they are not joking. We do not have the problem of windmills just where they are locating just 1 of the 4 they have slated to put up. Come out for the meeting tonight and see what they are up to. And then you can shoot your mouth off.
